Figure of Ganesha

Physical description

The dynamic pose, with both legs slightly bent, is unusual in India but not uncommon in Nepal. He holds prayer beads. an axe and a lotus flower. His trunk curls slightly to the right. His head is topped by a fan-shaped crown. The lotus base has well modelled petals with pierced gaps between them and is flat at the back. Brassy colour, little wear.

Object history note

Transferred from the India Museum to the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A) in 1870.
