- Provenance : Property from the Collection of the Bangdel-Shakya Estate, Virginia, USA.
- Footnotes : While living in London and Paris, Bangdel remained keenly aware of Nepal's modern literary movement, which largely flourished near his birthplace, in Darjeeling. The hill station's large diaspora population could publish books and newspapers in Nepali far from the censorship of Nepal's monarchy. In this intimate gouache, Bangdel uses agitated flecks of pigment to capture the heartache of a famous scene from the Nepali love poem Muna Madan by Laxmi Prasad Devkota (1909-1959). In this scene, Madan, the husband, bids farewell to his new wife Muna, before he leaves to pursue his fortune in Tibet. Bangdel's use of a pastel palette lends a sense of softness to this tender moment. For viewers aware of Devkota's poem, the scene is particularly sad, as Madan and Muna are ill fated lovers, and will not meet again.
