- Footnotes : Madan's trip to Tibet was supposed to last only one month. As Devkota's prose explains, Madan became so enchanted with Lhasa that he lost track of time, and only awoke from his stupor after more than six months. Back in Nepal, Muna, having heard no news of her husband, assumes the worst and passes away, along with her mother-in-law, of heartbreak. Here, Bangdel captures Madan's agony when he learns of his family's demise. He, too, would eventually succumb to the intense pain of loss. This painting's themes continue to resonate, as many Nepalis feel the need to leave their families in search of economic opportunity abroad.
