  • FOOTNOTES : An exercise in perspective, this painting demonstrates Bangdel's continued interest in capturing the humble architecture of India's sprawling urban centers, fashioned from simple materials like brick and tin. On the right, Bangdel paints a row of modest shelters, composing the exterior walls from a series of distinct brushstrokes, oscillating between representation and abstraction. Having grown up in the Himalayan foothills, Bangdel was deeply struck by the overwhelming urban spaces of Kolkata, as well as the plight of the poor. In the late 1940s, Bangdel began writing some of the first realistic novels in Nepali, which empathetically depicted the lives of the less fortunate, who were traditionally excluded as subjects in literature. This painting demonstrates Bangdel's ongoing visual interest in the city as a setting for life and literature.
