Depicted on the first page of this manuscript is the Buddhist deity Chakrasamvara embracing his consort, Vajravarahi. Chakrasamvara is worshipped by many devotees as a powerful personal deity. Esoteric Buddhist practice holds that devotion to these deities, in combination with certain guided ritual, recitation, and visualization practices, can lead to enlightenment. Chakrasamvara is usually depicted, as on this page, with a fierce appearance and multiple heads and arms. He is generally viewed as a symbol of compassion. He and his consort, who embodies wisdom, represent the union of principles leading to enlightenment. The Paramasukha Chakrasamvara Tantra was an important Esoteric Buddhist text.
