Relief Panel

Relief Panel

Frieze depicting a Saiva Gana. Ganas, the traditional attendants of the Hindu deity Siva, are recognizable by their obese and often coarse features. They are usually depicted at the base of structures, their squat figures providing Atlas-like support to the building above. The gana, like the grotesque in medieval European art, provided the artist with a rare opportunity for caricature and whimsical invention.
