Surya stands in his chariot pulled by seven horses, his raised hands each holding the stem of a lotus blossom. Beneath him, Aruna, the brother of Garuda, drives the chariot holding the reigns in both his raised hands. Surya is attended by Pratuyusa (early morning), and Usa (sunrise or dawn), who face outwards at the front of the chariot in the archer’s pose, to shoot arrows of light to dispel darkness. By his side, his consorts Rajni (night) and Caya (shadow), both holding flywhisks, moderate the heat of the Sun god. The entire composition is surrounded by a torana of intricate foliate design, surmounted by a grimacing kirtimukha.
