Padmapani (“he with the lotus in his hand”) is a form of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. The lotus, now gone, was probably in his left hand. Avalokiteshvara is one of the most popular bodhisattvas, honored by Buddhists for his infinite compassion and for his help in times of need.
