Anthropomorphic mask

Anthropomorphic mask

Oval wooden mask, worked by progressive splicing. Human face with prominent forehead, large straight nose, oval eyes with very lightly sculpted eyebrows. Toothed mouth, oval Dimensions: Height 24.5 cm.

These masks with enigmatic iconography and function are attributed to the non-Buddhist populations of the hills of Nepal (Tamang, Raï or Gurung). Their use has certainly been lost since the beginning of the last century and it is not known whether these faces were those of ancestors, demons or theater characters.
