- Footnotes : A lone figure, barefoot and isolated, holds her head in anguish. She is wrapped in a saturated blue cloak, and seems to rest in a place that could be anywhere and nowhere. Taking Bangdel's title as a point of departure, this distraught matriarch becomes a surrogate for the country of Nepal. In 1979, Nepal underwent a spell of political turmoil, including widespread student protests and an eventual referendum on the country's political system. Throughout his life, Bangdel maintained that his art was not political; nevertheless, this painting clearly demonstrates the artist's concern for his country's future. Moreover, this work emphasizes the diversity of subjects Bangdel embraced throughout his life. Even while he distinguished himself with his signature vision of abstraction, he frequently revisited earlier motifs, including figures imbued with social commentary.
