This painting depicts a scene in hell. the hell is ruled by Yama who rides a buffalo. Aryavalokitesvara appears and tries to save the souls which have fallen to the hell. While the blazing sea of fire and sharp rocks excruciate the fallen souls, cool water richly ripples under Aryavalokitesvara’s feet. On the top right we see Amitabha Tathagata, which tell us that Amitabha Tathagata is borrowing the form of Avalokitesvara. The artist has achieved in creating a dramatic effect in representing Buddhist teachings.
