BUDDHA

BUDDHA

The Buddha is seated in dhyanasana on a lotus throne, his left hand in dhyanamudra and his right hand in bhumisparsamudra. He is clad in a diaphanous sanghati with a floral border that is draped gently over the shoulder, and neatly folded under the ankles. He has a wide serene face with elongated eyes, a gentle smile, a recessed urna on the forehead, the neck with three horizontal lines, and the ears with pendulous pierced lobes. His head is covered in tight snail shaped curls of hair surmounted by an ushnisha in the shape of a lotus bud.

The lotus throne upon which the Buddha is seated is supported on a stepped pedestal with a further lotus rim. Two crouching elephants flank the pendant textile that hangs from the front. An elaborate arched repousse stele surrounds the central figure. Two standing Buddhas flank the seated Buddha, each supported by a recumbent elephant. A winged figure of Garuda tops the stele and is flanked on either side by nagas, apsaras, and makaras
