  • NOTE : Indra is seated in lalitasana on a double-lotus pedestal, with his consort Indrani seated on his left knee. His right hand is raised in abhayamudra and his left hand encircles Indrani's waist. His principal emblem, the vajra, is supported with a flower at his left shoulder. His characteristic horizontal third eye is finely incised on his forehead beneath a tall foliate crown. Indrani's left hand is also raised in abhayamudra and her right hand in varadamudra. Both wear plain dhotis that fall to their ankles, they are adorned with necklaces, earrings and elaborate diadems. According to Buddhist thought, Indra is regarded as the King of the Gods. He is especially venerated in the Nepal Valley, where good rain during the monsoon season allows for more than one yearly harvest of rice, and he is the object of a very important festival held in September, when households display images of the god. Indra's consort, Indrani is a mother goddess personifying the god's energy and shakti.
