Gilded bronze statue of the goddess Indrani, belonging to the statue of Indra (Mak 1393). On base.
Indra is used in religious hymns from around 1500 BC. named as a mighty god. But gradually his meaning diminished. In later texts, and for present-day Hindu believers in India, he is only one of the winds, those of the East. Indra and his wife Indrani still play an important role in Nepal. Images of Indra are carried through the streets during an annual festival.
