  • Footnotes : This late example of Bangdel's painting demonstrates his enduring engagement with the magnificient Himalayas, in addition to the tensions between representation and abstraction. This visual play is often found in Bangdel's work. Here, he renders Mt. Everest, the world's tallest mountain and international symbol of Nepal, in energetic streaks of color that illustrate snow, soil, and ice blue. The tightly cropped image of the peak enhances the painting's drama. A natural monument of sublime scale becomes ethereal through Bangdel's hand and dissolves, like an abstract painting, into a purple and gray fog.
