  • Provenance : Property from the Collection of the Bangdel-Shakya Estate, Virginia, USA.
  • Footnotes : Throughout his life, Bangdel frequently utilized a blue palette to depict his subjects. Bangdel's use of the color suggests a clear reference to Picasso's famous blue period, in which shades of azure and sapphire offered the Spanish modernist a tool for depicting melancholy and society's outcasts. In this work, Bangdel searches for a similar disposition, and enshrouds a woman in not only blue garments, but also a deep, radiating aura. The painting's moody environment casts the central figure as pensive and introspective, as she gently holds a cup.
