- Footnotes : In the decades after moving to Nepal in 1961, Bangdel cycled through several different subjects, but frequently depicted abstracted scenes of the natural world, with special attention given to the Himalayas. An iconic symbol of Nepal's national and geographic heritage, the sublime mountain range became an iconic subject ripe for Bangdel's formal experimentation. With Abstract I, Bangdel renders a cross like composition of heavily textured paint occupying the center of the canvas. The form becomes an opening in the canvas, like a crevasse in a glacier, which reveals the earthen tones underneath a surface of offwhites. This work, and its companion Abstract II, appear to reveal in their peripherals a spectrum of snow tones, reflecting sunlight or mixed with sediment.
