  • Footnotes : In an unpublished essay written in 1980, Bangdel attributed his journey as an artist to a formative childhood encounter with Mt. Kanchenjunga, the world's third tallest mountain located in Sikkim on the border between India and Nepal. "It just happened one day," writes Bangdel, "as I was roaming around on the hill in the evening, no one was there...I was totally mesmerized by the lovely golden shade, due to sunset, on Mt. Kanchenjunga." While "I had seen that sun before, and I had also seen that mountain before," Bangdel explains, that day's "sunset was so powerful that it left an unforgettable mark on my child soul." In this moment, Bangdel experienced the profound importance of perception and the possibility of seeing something so familiar, anew. These shifts in perspective were themes he frequently returned to in his abstract painting.
