  • Footnotes : Bangdel's 1952 gouache Full Moon Night is a key fulcrum between early works like Suburb of Calcutta and later abstractions. Painted in Paris, where the artist moved to in late 1952, the work reconstructs a cityscape into a series of colorful, polygonal planes. An urban mountain range emerges from serene darkness. A tangerine moon, flat and circular, looms above the towering cluster of buildings, stretched and enlarged into diverse, unrealistic scales. Few, if any, right angles can be located in this composition. Here, Bangdel explores the possibility of the city as a subject for formal experimentation; the city transforms into a series of cellular shapes, planes of color that capture the quiet of the night, as well as the emptiness of the modern city.
