Lakshmi

Lakshmi

This painting depicts the goddess Laxmi who is very popular as the auspicious goddess of fortune. Laxmi is usually shown together with an elephant, but she is standing on a turtle here instead. Dinesh Charan Shrestha pursues realistic expression of body in oils which leads the half-naked goddess to appear almost sensual. Moreover, the realistic depiction of the halo and flowers around the goddess actually seems to make them look unreal. The combination of the real and unreal generates somewhat kitchy charm to the painting.
