Ragamala Album: Bhasha Ragini

Ragamala Album: Bhasha Ragini

This painting is a page from a Ragamala album. The Sanskrit word “ragamala” literally means a garland of musical modes. Each mode or raga expresses an emotional situation or mood and is personified either as a male (raga) or a female (ragini). Bhasa is described in the poem at the top of the page as a beautiful woman of golden complexion who has just awakened. She is sitting affectionately with her husband on a bed.
