The Hindu deity Vishnu

The Hindu deity Vishnu

Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, here stands regally before a leaf-shaped halo. His four hands carry the discus, mace, conch, and lotus seed. He wears the sacred thread (a mark of a Hindu), a crown, and a wrapped lower garment. The broad face and stocky limbs of this figure are typical of sculptures from the Kathmandu Valley during this period. Traces of red indicate that worshipers once applied sandalwood paste to the sculpture as part of a ritual practice.
